Cancelled games - C

Cancelled video games project

This project concerns cancelled games in the range of 1995-2005.

 Section: C

 #############################################################################

Cabbage

Cabbage is a cancelled 64DD game by Nintendo.
It was going to be a animal breeder game.

Expected release date: 1998, then 1999, then 2000

Cabbage was the codename for a gaming project worked on by Nintendo's best talents.
It was a combination of Pokemon and Mother.

Announced in 1997 for the 64DD, it was an interesting project.
Players would breed creatures in the game; the internal clock would keep track of time.
Players could then transfer the creature to GameBoy when not home to take care of it.

The game has a victim of circumstance.
The 64DD was a flop and the regular N64 wouldn't have allowed the gameplay mechanics to work.
The producers had other projects, like Pokemon and Mother 3 (64DD version cancelled).

Elements of Cabbage were later used in Animal Crossing games and Nintendogs.

Call of Cthulhu: Destiny's End

Call of Cthulhu: Destiny's End is a cancelled PS2, Xbox and PC game from Headfirst Productions.
It was to be the sequel to Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth.

Expected release date: Q4 2004, then March 2005, then Winter 2006

Official UK PlayStation 2 Magazine issue 29 (January 2003)

PSM2 issue 64 (August 2005)

Destiny's End started off as Tainted Legacy in 2002, a PS2 exclusive due for 2004.
It was to take place in Innsmouth 80 years after Dark Corners of the Earth.

Later on Headfirst Productions changed tact, renaming the game and making it for the Xbox too.
The gameplay went from first person to third person (likely due to Resident Evil 4).
A co-op multiplayer was added to add to the thrills.

The characters were changed too: Joshua and Madeline were changed too Jacob and Emily.
You can swap between them at any time, and in co-op you both control either.

Eventually the PS2 version was dropped and the game was being developed for the Xbox and PC.

Computer Gaming World issue 255 (October 2005)

In July 2005 the publisher Hip Interactive declared bankruptcy.
Unable to find a publisher, the game went dormant.
Headfirst Productions went defunct in 2006.

Call of the Dragonfly

Call of the Dragonfly is a cancelled Xbox game by Lost Boys Games.
It was to be a spooky dooky mystery spy thriller, like an mature Scooby Doo.

Expected release date: Summer 2002

Electronic Gaming Monthly 141 (April 2001)

In the year 2050, southern England is in a state of dread.
Young women have been vanishing. Police have no clues.
That is about to change.

You play as Angel, a female member of a covert operations team.
Your task is to investigate these disappearances.
Following a tip off, your prime suspect is a secret underground corporation.

Stealth is the name of the game.
You would have needed to infiltrate the heavily fortified complex and find the truth.

Edge issue 126

That was the old plot.
Sometime in 2001 the plot was changed.

You are Chrys Lane, a female member of a covert operations team.
Your task is to investigate Meditech, a shady technology company.
They are suspected to be involved in the abduction of several British scientists.

During her investigation, Chrys is infected with an experimental nano-virus.
Instead of killing her, it gives her special powers.

Stealth is the name of the game.
You would have needed to infiltrate the Meditech facility and find the antidote.

Trailer

Impressive stuff. So why was this game cancelled?
Every publisher turned down the game, so in the end Lost Boy Games declared defeat.

In 2003, Lost Boy Games was sold to Media Republic.
Lost Boy Games became Guerrilla Games, known for the Killzone series.

Carnivale

Carnivale is a cancelled PS1, N64, and GBC game by TerraGlyph Interactive Studios.
It was to be based on the 2000 animated movie of the same name.

Expected release date: 2000

N64 Gamer issue 34 (December 2000)

Carnivale: Cenzo's Adventure was about a travelling circus with a dark sinister twist.
You would control one of five kids at a time and try to escape from the carnival.
As each kid you would need to duel one of the carnivale masters to earn your freedom.

The kids are Ginger, Eddy, Jack, Cenzo, and Milly.
There was to be vehicles and racing, lots of rides to have a go on, and many power-ups.

There was to be two modes:
* Adventure Mode, based on the plot of the movie
* Racing Mode, which looks like Diddy Kong Racing

It wouldn't be restricted to just the movie; there was also a Canivale cartoon to work with.

There was also a Game Boy Colour version in the works.
Multiplayer racing via link cable was considered

Unfortunately, many factors aided in this game's demise:
* the movie was a flop
* the cartoon was obscure
* by late 2000 the Nintendo 64 was being phased out
* TerraGlyph Interactive Studios went defunct in 2001

Carrier: The Next Mutation

Carrier: The Next Mutation was the intended sequel to the original Dreamcast game.
The game was intended for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox, developed by Jaleco.

Expected release date: Winter 2000, then Q2 2001

Electronic Gaming Monthly issue 137 (December 2000)

Carrier: The Next Mutation was to be a survival horror game.
You can switch between third person and first person view.

It was just going to be an updated port of the game but eventually it became an outright sequel.
The game was to remove the tank controls of the original.
Another positive addition was a better camera system that follows you more efficiently.

The plot involved being on a carrier ship, entering a silent bigger ship.
A virus on the ship has turned the crew into zombies.

In 2001 an Xbox version was talked about with promise, but trouble was brewing.

Carrier: The Next Mutation was cancelled because Jaleco wanted to trim development costs.
The financial move allowed the company to exist for another decade, before closing in 2014.

Castlevania: Resurrection

Castlevania: Resurrection was a cancelled Dreamcast game by Konami.
It was a promising attempt to make a better 3D Castlevania game than the two N64 games.

Expected release date: November 1999, then January 2000, then Q1 2000, then Q2 2000, then 2001

Next Generation issue 57 (September 1999)

The game was to be set in 1666. You could play as two characters:
Sonia Belmont (from Castlevania: Legends) and Victor Belmont.

(Not to be confused with the person of the same name from Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2).

Victor Belmont did not accept the Belmont legacy, which led to them disappearing in the 1800's.
Victor then finds himself teleported back in time to 1666, to help Sonia rid the world of Dracula.

Official Sega Dreamcast Magazine issue 1 (September 1999)

Electronic Gaming Monthly issue 132 (July 2000)

The trouble started when the USA side of Konami got its claws into development.
Without their Japanese masters present to keep them in check, the project was not off to a good start.

Konami was weary of their US counterpart's efforts.
It is not a good thing when the game keeps getting delayed.
Eventually they had enough.

Castlevania Resurrection was cancelled in March 2000.
It was cancelled on the day of the announcement of the PlayStation 2.
That was a nail in the coffin for the Dreamcast and the final nail for this game.

Intro. It's basically the E3 video but with a cool techno beat.

Chiller Killers

Chiller Killers is a cancelled PS1 game by Modified.
It was to be an action adventure game set in the funky future featuring 90s techno tunes.

Expected release date: Fall 1999, then Autumn 2000

Official UK PlayStation Magazine issue 42 (March 1999)

You would play as a "rogue oxygen dealer", crossing the urban land.
Cashing in the oxygen will allow you to buy weapons needed to evade the hologram police.
With a 24-channel evolving soundtrack, it was to be a music-based experience.

Modified was a British multimedia company. This was to be their first game.
They founded Fuzzy Groove, an internet-based music label.
One of their premier releases was Chiller Killers, an interactive music CD, released in 1997.

PCmania issue 55 (May 1997)

Wait a minute... Chiller Killers DID come out but it's not a game!
Was the interactive music CD going to get its own game for the PS1?
Did the gaming journalists get it wrong? Or did Modified get it wrong?

A demo of this game appears in PCmania issue 55 (May 1997).

Chronicle

Chronicle is a cancelled PS1 game from Sidhe Interactive.
It was originally a Net Yaroze game before Sidhe got a dev kit from Sony.

Expected release date: Q3 1999

PSM issue 8 (April 1998)

Chronicle was to be a third-person action-adventure steampunk gothic kind of game.
Unlikely heroes must survive through long labyrinths of monsters.
A lot of the plot and character information either wasn't conceived or it has been lost.

It was to be a mighty project that would marvel with its programming prowess.
Unfortunately, Sidhe had bitten off more they can chew.

PSM issue 9 (May 1998)

Chronicle was canned once Sidhe realized that the project was too big in scope.
They were fresh from Net Yaroze and so felt that the game was too complex and ambitious.

Sidhe scrapped the game and worked on Dirty War, a simple tank combat game.
That too was cancelled for reasons you can read about in its section.

Citizen Zero

Citizen Zero is a cancelled Xbox and PC game by Micro Forté, delivered by Microsoft.
It was to be one of the first MMORPGs for the Xbox. We all know how well those turn out.

Expected release date: Winter 2004

Edge issue 138 (July 2004)

Citizen Zero was to be on online RPG action game for the then-infant Xbox Live.
Imagine: a persistent MMORPG, but like Halo, and cross-play between Xbox and PC.
It was the complete package that had gamers salivating.

In 2002 Microsoft teamed up with Micro Forté to develop games with their BigWorld engine.
That project was an original game that got worked into Citizen Zero.
By 2004 it was official confirmed: Citizen Zero was coming to Xbox.

The game started off being set at Allrua, on Neo-Eden, which used to be a penal colony.
You would awake with amnesia; you would forge your new identity.
Doing tasks and quests would earn the respect of the Overarchy.

There was to be different races, like the Bazel, and the Cyborgs (these have been renamed).
No matter what race you choose to be, you can do anything.
The single-player mode was intended to last around five months or so.

By 2004 the plot and setting was changed to Typhron.
You would play as Zero, a free mind in the world of prisoners.
Join factions or go solo in your quest to reestablish contact with Earth.

Xbox Nation issue 16 (July 2004)

Citizen Zero has had quite a ride.
The project started off in 2000 and updates stopped in mid-late 2004.
It would take until 2006 until the website was updated... to remove the 'last updated' text.

In 2006 the project was then ported over to the Xbox 360.
In 2007 the project was cancelled.
2000-2007. Seven years and for what? Citizen Zero... well, we got zero game.

I have a video - an interview from
Micro Forté, - taken from their archived website.
Unfortunately its a 160x120 video weighing in at 698KB in file size. Yep, shit quality.

Timeline:
2000: development starts
2002: Microsoft teams up with Micro Forté
2004: Citizen Zero formally confirmed for Xbox
2005: was being developed/ported to the Xbox 360
2007: game cancelled

Citizens: Backwater Affairs

Citizens: Backwater Affairs is a cancelled PC game by Microprose.
It was to be a simulation game inspired by Little Computer People.

Expected release date: June/July 1996

PC Zone issue 36 (March 1996)

The plot involves a company called Celestial Development Inc.
You have died and you now have a work for this company in the afterlife.
You are the guardian of the town of Blackwater.

Blackwater is an experimental town to see how free will (or lack of it) affects society.
Problems keep arising and you must task the citizens to fix them.
You only have one year to do it though until you lose your job.

These problems are caused by mischievous imps.
These imps represent the seven deadly sins. Corrupted citizens can't be manipulated.
Thankfully you have angels to help clean out the imps.

You could not directly task the people though...
You can control the emotions of your citizens. Treat them well and they'll be more receptive.
It really was The Sims before it's time.

What killed the project was a lack of confidence.
The higher-ups were unsure that such a game would sell.
The game was canned in its alpha stage.

Timeline:
1994: starts development as "Little People"
early 1996: formally announced
late 1996: cancelled

Clockwork Knight: Pengin War

Clockwork Knight: Pengin War (not a typo) is a cancelled Sega Saturn game by Sega.
It was to be a puzzle game spin-off of the Clockwork Knight series.

Expected release date: Q1 1996

Sega Saturn Magazine issue 3 (January 1996)

Mean Machines issue 40 (February 1996)

The game, aka Clockwork Knight Puzzle, would have played like Bomberman games.
Explore 3D mazes, pushing exploding balls around to destroy familiar enemies.
Multiplayer too of course. Up to four people could play on the grid at once.

Computer & Video Games issue 171 (February 1996)

The game was probably cancelled due to the Clockwork Knight series under-performing.
They had other fish to fry, like Sonic X-treme (also cancelled).

In 2005 a prototype copy was dumped. Download link is below.

Close Combat: Red Phoenix

Close Combat: Red Phoenix is a cancelled Xbox and PC game by Atomic Games.
It was to be loosely based on the novel Red Phoenix by Larry Bond.

Expected release date: summer 2005, then early 2006, then 2007

It was to be a real time tactics game in the Close Combat franchise.
Since it was 'loosely' based on the book, it probably had similar scenarios, just no plot.
As such it would have been set in Korea during the Korea War.

The dev team worked with active US Marines for the most authentic gameplay.
As such the game was intended to be used by the United States Marine Corps for training.

The game was cancelled shortly after Atomic Games was acquired by Destineer.
The other game in product, Close Combat: First to Fight, was focused on instead.

Colliderz

Colliderz is a cancelled PS1, Saturn, and PC game by ASC Games.
It was your standard ultraviolent game-show type game that were popular at the time.

Expected release date: September 1997

 Gamefan issue 55 (July 1997)

In the year 2021, violence between the aliens races is rampant.
To sort it out, the Colliderz Combat League establishes the violent contact sport.
Diplomacy is boring; in the future all disputes will be solved in an arena.

There was to be eight alien races that make up sixteen teams.
Each team comes with a customizable craft that you can adjust its stats and specs.
There was to be twenty arenas to fight in, and plenty of power-ups.

Ultra Gameplayers issue 100 (August 1997)

In October of 1997 Colliderz was cancelled.
Perhaps ASC Games felt the market was too crowded with similar games.
Maybe no publishers wished to touch it.

Converse Hardcore Hoops

Converse Hardcore Hoops is a cancelled PS1 and Saturn game from Virgin Interactive.
It was to be a basketball game, as you might have guessed.

Expected release date: Q4 1996

Game Players issue 74 (August 1995)

Converse Hardcore Hoops Games World #15 (September 1995)

The game started off as Hardcore Hoops.
The name change probably derived from a licensed deal with the Converse shoes.
Converse Hardcore Hoops was cancelled in 1995.

Crazy Car Championship

Crazy Car Championship is a cancelled PS2, Xbox, and PC game by Synaptic Soup.
Developed by ex-Bullfrog guys, it was bound to be crazy.

Expected release date: 2002

Official UK PlayStation2 Magazine issue 5 (March 2001)

This game was to be an arcade style game of fast action.
You would be able to drive Steampunk style cars around interesting circuits.
It would play like a Wipeout game, with 18 different weapons.

You would have been able to build your own hybrid vehicles.
Let your imagination run wild as you build Victoria-era behemoths.

Full-client multiplayer was to be supported for online racing.
Cross-platform multiplayer was in store.

Development of this game began in January 2001.
It was to be the first game built on their multi-format Cipher engine.
When NVIDIA's GeForce3 GPU was release a month later it got to be quite promising.

In 2002 the game was considering changing the title of the game.
Maybe because 'crazy' in the title = bargain bin.

In June of 2004 Synaptic Soup acquired Octagon Entertainment to be its publisher.

PC Zone issue 100 (March 2001)

Synaptic Soup closed down in May of 2003.
Their official website attributes its closure to the economic climate.
Crazy Car Championship was not announced as cancelled, so it was presumably canned then.

Creation

Creation was a cancelled PC game, developed by Bullfrog Productions from 1993 to 1997.
The game was also being developed for the PlayStation, the Saturn, and the Amiga CD32.

The game was to be a real-time strategy game.

You pilot a submarine under the waters of the planet Creation of the Syndicate Wars universe.

Your job is to stop the ships from harvesting the fungus found there.

It is a powerful drug that will be used as a weapon on Earth.

Electronic Arts pull the plug on the game because "sub games don't sell".

Peter Molyneux was upset he was fond of the project and was sad that it was cancelled.

Trivia:

Originally, in the game Magic Carpet, if you go underwater the gameplay becomes that of Creation.
Sadly that concept was never used.

Crusaders: Battle for Outremer

Crusaders: Battle for Outremer is a cancelled PC game by Black Cactus.
It was a RTS game set after the Second Crusade (1150-1250).

Expected release date: March 2003

PC Zone issue 121 (November 2002)

You play as a humble Crusader. Your quest is to become the King of Jerusalem.
To achieve this you'll need to be diplomatic, economical, and militaristic.

The game was to be more about empire building than massive battles a la the Total War series.
The battles would be small but reliant on terrain advantage, like hills and cliffs.
Battles would comprise of around 100-150 troops.

Crusaders was to be as historically accurate as possible.
With building your city you would need to take into account hygiene like a Sim City game.
Whether or not these translated into fun was another matter.

PC Zone issue 122 (December 2002)

PC Zone issue 132 (September 2003)

Crusaders: Battle for Outremer was cancelled when the publisher Wanadoo wasn't interested in it.
By August 2003 Black Cactus removed Crusaders: Battle for Outremer from their website.
The only games Black Cactus released were the Warrior Kings games. A shame.

Crystal Atatrium

Crystal Atatrium is a cancelled PC MMORPG by the Crystal Atatrium team.
It was to be an anime-esque MMO dealing with good vs evil.

Expected release day: 2004, then 2005

Long ago the powerful forces of nature took the form of crystals.
Gods appeared as avatars of these crystals.
With their powers combined they formed he Supreme Being, who gave life to the land.

Eight races were created:
* Lenian
* Mellek
* Deamon
* Nimbal
* Belle
* Tramin
* Dragoons
* Ferrans

These tribes went to war, with even these Gods joining the fun picking sides.
Soon an uneasy calm settled over the lands.
That's where you, the player character comes in.

You could choose various classes, called Jobs, to play as.
These include the knight, thief, priest, wizard, squire, farmer, fisherman, hunter, miner...
... witchdoctor, alchemist, apprentice, fighter, economist, necromancer, woodcutter, and Bisian.

Game development was slow as it was an indie game with little to no funding.
Development seamed to have ceased in mid-2005.

Cyber Thug

Cyber Thug/Cyberthug is a cancelled PS1 and PC game by Saffire.
It was to be based on the character Luke 'Cyberthug' Dodge from the movie Fled.

Expected release date: October 1996, then December 1996

Electronic Gaming Monthly issue 86 (September 1996)

Yes, you would play as Stephen Baldwin's character from the 1996 film.
He talks of hacking, well now its your turn to hack up some digital faces.

In March of 1996, MGM Interactive announced a deal with Saffire to make the game.
This game would be the start of Saffire diving deeper into the world of licensed games.

Cyber Thug was to be a third person action game.
On certain levels the genre changes, such as driving a cybersled.
There was to be at least 24 missions.

The game was cancelled later that year.
I suspect it was due to Fled being a bad movie, so MGM cancelled it.

To promote the game, a 16 page comic book was released.
You can probably find it scanned online, or buy it for an outrageous price somewhere.
