Cancelled games - U

Cancelled video games project

This project concerns cancelled games in the range of 1995-2005.

Section: U

Ultra Descent

Ultra Descent is a cancelled Nintendo 64 game from Parallax Software.
It was a part of Interplay's trio of N64 games (one of them being Raze).

Expected release date: Q1 1997, Winter 1997

Descent 3 was being developed for the PC. There is speculation that Ultra Descent is a port.
Either that or Ultra Descent was being built on the Descent 3 engine.

Interplay wasn't keen on the costs of cartridges versus potential profit.
As such, they pulled out of the N64 market, taking this game with them.

Apparently there are some commercials made for it, but it doesn't look like they're online.

Unity

Unity is a cancelled GameCube from Jeff Minter.
It would have been the dream unity of Llamasoft and Lionhead Studios.

Expected release: 2005

Unity was announced in January of 2003.
It was to be a trippy shooter, like a modern Tempest.
The game would be like Rez but in Jeff Minter's style.

Edge issue 120 (February 2003). The game was featured on the cover

Unity was dubbed so because it combines Jeff Minter's interests: music, light, and bullets.
Peter Molyneux was eager to work with a man whom he greatly admired (workwise).

Unity began as an idea in 1994, just after Minter finished Tempest 2000.
Jeff alone was to make the game in 12 months, but development was tricky.

He was working on the GameCube, new technology.
Lionhead Studio was not too impressed by the game, considering its development speed.

In December of 2004, Unity was cancelled.
The game was taking too long to develop. It was a mutual decision to end production.
Two years of collaboration ended on good terms at least.

Universe Unlimited

Universe Unlimited is a cancelled PC MMORPG Ethereal Evolution.
It was to be a sci-fi MMO rather than a medieval fantasy one.

Expected release date: Q4 2003, then 2004

The year is year 2262 and a nuclear apocalypse had robbed the land of life.
Now aliens are planning to invade the survivors.
Get into ships and blast them in outer space.

The game would play like EVE Online, with the trading and cargo freight and planet exploring.
The different being you're taking on aliens, not each other.

Universe Unlimited was cancelled for unknown reasons.

Urban Dominion

Urban Dominion is a cancelled PC MMORPG by Global Gaming Innovations.
It was to be an FPS MMO set in the 1980s.

Expected release date: 2003/2004

PC Gamer issue 123 (June 2003)

The game started off as Dominion. A week later it got renamed to Urban Dominion.

The year is 1983 and organised crime rules the world.
You were a cop but have relented and joined a gang.
Now it is your versus the government.

There was to be three factions: the Mafia, Law Enforcement, and the Gangs.
Presumably you can choose your class.

In mid 2004 Urban Dominion had a public beta test.
Their website, as well as Global Gaming Innovations' website, stopped updating.
Then it close in late 2005. Presumably the game was cancelled when devs went belly up.

I suspect the game was doomed from the beginning.
The game was built on the Quake II engine.
By then the Quake III engine and Unreal Engine 2 were already out. Oh well.
