Cancelled games - K

Cancelled video games project

This project concerns cancelled games in the range of 1995-2005.

Section: K

 #############################################################################

Kanaan

Kanaan is a cancelled PC and PS1 game by Argonaut Games.
It was to be a FPS game. Chaos was its original project name.

Expected release date: November 1998, then early 1999

Edge issue 62 (September 1998)

You would play as Agent Gabriel Cain, the only human on an alien world.
There are canine-like baddies (the Kanaan) who want to blast you.
Later on you'll join an underground resistance to take down Commander Kray, the big baddy.

The game was going to be big and expansive, ground-breaking in the way Half Life was.
There would be rideable vehicles, like tanks, trucks, jeeps, planes, and jets.
With a multitude of weapons, from shotguns to snipers, the game was sure to be a blast.

PC Zone issue 68 (October 1998)

PC Zone issue 69 (November 1998)

The game started development in 1996 and was an on-off project.
Argonaut Games keep getting distracted with other titles, like Croc and Buck Bumble.

Kanaan was finally cancelled in early 2000.
This could possibly be because of the launch of the PS2; instant dated game!
Ubisoft put the game on hold before its unceremonious cancellation.

Kat Burglar

Kat Burglar is a cancelled PS2, Xbox, and PC game by Krome Studios.
The game was to be a cat burglin' robbing caper but on the PG-13 side.

Expected release date: 2001

PC Powerplay issue 46 (March 2000)

Kat Burgler was to invoke the swingin' 60's.
Austin Powers had reignited the mojo for the groovy times.
As such, Kat Burglar was to hark back to the thriller days of classic capers.

You would play as Katherine Kell aka Kat.

You are a part of a team of six sexy female spies and thieves.
Your task is to steal valuable artwork for the collector Hugo Biggs-Lazenby.

Next Generation issue 74 (February 2001)

Kat Burgler was dropped by Krome so they can focus on Ty the Tasmanian Tiger.

Kehl: Fury Unbound:

Kehl: Fury Unbound is a cancelled Xbox game from DreamForge Intertainment.
It was to be a sci-fi action adventure game.

Expected release date: 2002

You play as Kehl, a huntress from a another world than ours.
An alien spaceship kidnaps her from her world.
Now she has to fight her way out of there.

The plot of the game is vague. Just what is going on?
As you explore and complete scripted events, the story opens up.
The non-linear nature allows you to progress at your own pace.

The combat of the game would be melee-focused.
You have a lot of skills and weapons to use. Repeated use levels them up.
Levelling these unlocks combination moves for massive damage.

The AI of the enemies was a notch above the standards of the day,
Their intelligence was dynamic, learning from your play-style to counteract you.
They would work in teams or sometimes turn their savage nature against each other.

Kehl: Fury Unbound was cancelled when DreamForge Intertainment went defunct in 2001.
Some sources say they closed in 2000.

Knights

Knights is a cancelled PS2, Xbox, Dreamcast, GC,
GBC , and PC,  from The Lost Boys Games.
It was to be a 3D action-platformer with a quirky sense of humour.

Expected release date: Fall 2000, then Xmas 2001, then September 2002

Official Dreamcast Magazine issue 4 (January 2000)

Knights started off as a multiplayer game for the Dreamcast and PC.
It would be a team-based FPS, that involved riding vehicles to get around.

Lost Boys Games were not used to programming 3D games.
Knights became a multiplayer game due to experimentation. It was essentially a tech demo.

The publisher, Project Two Interactive, went bankrupt and defunct in 2000.
Swing! Entertainment swung on by to pick up the game.
When the Dreamcast died in early 2001, Lost Boys Games switched over to the other consoles.

Official UK PlayStation2 Magazine issue 13 (November 2001)

Knights was redesigned to become the 3D action-platformer that was originally envisioned.

You would play Iron Nick, a dopey man, who must win a tournament hosted by the King of Whyrule. The winner of the tournament will have the honour to go rid the world of the orc invaders.
Sounds like the plot to Shrek.

Not only that but he will be the next ruler of the kingdom.
Bonus prize: the marriage to the beautiful Princess Layla.

Knights was to have a Monty Python type of humour.
Iron Nick is a dunce that is responsible for a lot of problems, but he has the golden heart to succeed.
Get it? Iron Nick... ironic. Geddit?

There are other funny names too.
Sir Cumferance the fat. Sir Rebrum the smart. Sir Real the crazy.

The world of Knights is medieval but there are some interesting weapons

These include things like a sniper rifle and magic.
Not only that but there are retro-style minigames that hark back to the arcade games of old.

The Game Boy port was just a simple top-down dungeon crawler, like Gauntlet.
The game disappeared when Lost Boy Games did.

Knights was cancelled in 2003 when Lost Boy Games was sold to Media Republic.
Lost Boy Games became Guerrilla Games, known for the Killzone series.

Kumite: The Fighter's Edge

Kumite: The Fighter's Edge is a cancelled PS1 game, developed by 47-Tek.
Devlopement began in early 1996 and was cancelled later that year.

Expected release date: September 1996, then November 1996

Computer and Video Games issue 176 (July 1996)

Computer and Video Games issue 177 (August 1996)

The game was a fighting game but in 3D.

Emphasis was on realism. That means when female characters realistic too.
Hopefully that meant jiggle physics.

The fighting styles of the cast of characters had good range.
47-Tek had some martial artists in the company to aid with the authenticity.

Electronic Gaming Monthly issue 137 (December 2000)

The game was cancelled because the project was too ambitious.
That and something to do with 'politics'.

The Tekken series and Soul calibur series were just getting started and were leading the way.
Knowing that their game would fall into obscurity upon release, Konami cancelled the game.
Or maybe there's another side to the story...
