Neandertal

Neandertal is a PC MMORPG by NGD Studios.
It was a caveman-themed romp around Africa. Hmm.

Expected release date: 2004/2005

Think of Neandertal as a prehistoric version of Rust.
Hunt animals, gather plants, craft weapons, and get to work.
The aim is survival, and as much roleplay as you can stand with the "ughs" and "ooks".

To survival you'll need to find a cave or create your own shelter out of wood or hides.
Be careful or permanent injuries can cripple your actions and sour your in-game mood.
Forge alliances with other players and perhaps create a family.

Customize your cavedude with all manner of clothes, armour, accessories, and tattoos.
Use shaman powers to heal, help with hunting, and to defend against other humans.

The world of Neandertal was going to be a realistic romp replete with everything.
The land is teeming with animals that herd, and hundreds of plants to heal and poison.
Beware for diseases and natural disasters are common.

Neandertal was silently cancelled around 2003.
NGD had shifted its focus over to Regnum Online, which was released in 2007.

Nooks and Crannies

Nooks and Crannies was a cancelled PC and PlayStation 2 game by AndNow Interactive.
The game was to be a Japanese PS2 launch title but never made it out the door.

Expected release date: 1999, then 2000

Next Generation issue 43 (July 1998)

Nooks and Crannies was going to be a monster breeder RTS game with online elements.
You can play solo missions or fight minions online over LAN or modem.
AndNow has stated it is like a Command and Conquer game.

In the year 2509 AD two types of creatures have been discovered: Nooks and Crannies.
They both hate each other.
They are violent and will kill at the slightest provocation. Good thing they breed like rabbits.

Every retail copy of the game gives you a unique Nook or Cranny to start your tribe.

Once you create a creature you place them in different environments, called Planetoids.
As your creature forms alliances with its own kind and fights the enemies, they get stronger.
Breeding your strong creature with other strong creatures of your tribe will create stronger ones.

Emotions play a big part of the creatures, whether they are playful or aggressive.
These emotions affect their AI and how they react to the environment and missions.

Electronic Gaming Monthly issue 123 (October 1999)

Nooks and Crannies was cancelled when developer AndNow Interactive closed down in 2000.
They went down after developing only one game: Mort the Chicken.
Oh and Tiny Tank. Now there's a legacy.

Nooks and Crannies got picked up by another developer, shifting its focus to the PC.
The game was altogether cancelled in 2002.
